From: Mike Linnolt, Haleakala NP, Maui, Hawaii Date: Fri, 17 Nov 2000 09:19:31 -1000 I just returned from an overnight observing session up on Haleakala on Maui. I decided to do it last night rather than Friday night because of uncertain weather coming in. Of course, the mid-Pacific region was not favored for the Leonids this year, so I was not surprised by the poor showing, despite good observing conditions. The radiant rose here around 10:00 UT, about 2 hours past the expected peak time. Below is my Quick report I submitted to IMO. A full detailed report will be coming later. I hope others will see some good action Friday night. For myself, I will be catching up on sleep... Cant pull 2 all-nighter in a row anymore! ====================== Observer: Mike Linnolt (LINMI) Date: Nov. 17, 2000 LOC: Haleakala NP, Maui, HI (20? 40' N, 156? 20m W) Begin End Teff LM LEO others ------------------------------- 0730-0752 0.33 6.6 0 5 0804-0836 0.50 6.6 0 10 0858-0933 0.50 6.1 1 7 0950-1024 0.50 5.7 2 5 1040-1113 0.50 5.9 3 9 1125-1158 0.50 5.9 8 5 1245-1318 0.50 5.8 10 6 1330-1402 0.50 5.7 9 7 1414-1445 0.50 5.5 8 5 --- Date: Sat, 18 Nov 2000 15:02:02 -1000 Finally got my full report of Thursday nights session completed. The 2 maxima of LEO presented me with a dilemma. When I go to Haleakala from Oahu the logistics prevent me from sleeping that night, so no way to observe 2 nights in a row after midnight. But, looking at the reports coming in, it appears the 2nd maximum around 8UT on the 18th wouldn't have yielded too much more meteors out here, because the radiant didn't rise until well past that maximum as well. My all-night session on the 16/17 at the summit of Haleakala was a good one. Except for somewhat "stormier" conditions than usual, with pretty stiff winds and periods of fog blowing past, the sky was excellently transparent and allowed good LM even while the moon was up. My LEO ZHR peaked early at 74.5 around 11:40 UT, as the radiant rapidly rose in the east, and declined steadily thereafter to 38.2 by 14:45 UT. I missed the real peak around 08:00 UT because the radiant was still below the horizon then. Their mean magnitude ranged from +3.0 to +3.9. Very few bright ones were seen, only one -3 and -2 out of 41 LEO stand out in this regard. Interestingly, at around the peak of the LEO (8 UT) I was observing under perfectly clear, moonless LM=6.6 sky, and I saw a definite enhancement of very faint (mag 5-6) SPO. I don't know if this is just a random event, or there really is some connection with the LEO shower in this regard! Has anyone else ever noticed such background enhancement at maximum when the main shower radiant is well below the horizon and thus invisible? Also, a couple of LEO appeared with the radiant still below the horizon. The first one I saw with the radiant about -8?. I suppose this is possible, because of the radiant zone is about this many degrees across, so a meteor coming from the upper most part of this zone would be very close to the horizon. Also, it should be possible to see a meteor from a radiant slightly below the horizon. If it was an extreme grazer passing slightly upward angle with respect to my local horizon, it could burn up at a sub-earth point several hundred km from my location, but would still be visible at a low elevation. And, there was other meteor activity as well. I guess with the less than spectacular LEO show, I was able to pay good attention to the other minor showers. The Taurids were steadily active all night, with an overall ZHR of 8.0. The Delta Eridanids were also active with mean ZHR of 6.7. Only one Zeta Puppid was seen. Now lets start analyzing all the data! Mike Linnolt.
