From: Glen Cozens, Nyngan, Australia Date: Tue, 20 Nov 2001 11:28:02 +1100 (EST) I saw the Leonids from Nyngan (7 hours drive NW of Sydney, Australia). It was clear and dark. Here are some details. Leonid Observations NSW 19/11/2001 Observer Glen Cozens Site 5km north of Nyngan, central NSW, Australia Nyngan~Rs population 2100 Sky perfectly clear and very dark (light on south side below 10 degrees elevation) Weather cold and windy Time zone AEDT = UT +11 Time watched from 12:45 am till after 5 am AEDT Shower started at 2:55am and seemed to peak at 4:55am Astronomical twilight started at 4:30 am Equipment 35mm SLR camera with wide-angle lens, 400ASA film, cable release Sony video camera used to record commentary and time in hms (Commented on every meteor seen from 3:10 am to 4:40am) Two tripods Saw meteors coming out of Leo in all directions towards: Corvus in the east (many) Carina, Crux & the pointers (many bright meteors) LMC & SMC in the south (large number) Taurus, Saturn & M45 in the northwest Orion (not many) Auriga (many) Gemini & Jupiter in the north (many) Procyon The best ones were to the south. A bright one overhead was one of two that lit up the ground. At least two left trials that were visible for several minutes. Often saw 3 or 4 meteors at once. I need to listen to my commentary and do a count. Also have to develop film, about 6 shots.
