From: Rob McNaught, Australia Date: Tue, 17 Nov 1998 14:20:09 +1100 (EST) High rates of Leonid fireballs from 17UT to 19:30 UT (dawn), with about half the Leonids of negative mag. Several around mag -7 and one around -14. We had about 50% cirrus giving several mags obscuration, but for much of the night half the sky was clear. Rates seen not as high as 1993 Perseid Max from France, but the ratio of fireballs much higher than the Perseids. An amazing sight and if the peak occurs around 19 UT on the 17th (24hrs after the observations above), the peak will be spectacular! Get out and look even in cloudy skies! The bright fireballs "punch through"the clouds brilliantly.
