From: Dave Hostetter, Louisiana Date: Wed, 18 Nov 1998 15:52:31 -0600 I'm just getting back to the planetarium after taking a couple days off for the Leonids. Man, I envy all of you who had clear skies -- sounds like a fabulous show! Here in south Louisiana we've been clouded out since Thursday. Weather reports indicated a clearing Tuesday morning, but it didn't happen. A group of us drove an hour or so north in an attempt to find clear sky, but failed. We ended up sitting around for a couple of hours watching the clouds. Every once in a while, the clouds would flash, apparently as a bright Leonid went over. One of them was tremendously bright with two or three bursts. Imagine three bright spots in the clouds similar to the way the moon looks when the clouds are just thick enough to keep you from seeing the disk of the moon itself, and the ground lighted through the clouds to about the level of full moon lighting -- complete with flickering shadows. I can't even imagine what that one would have looked like in a clear sky!
