From: Prof. Dr. Ulf von Zahn, at Kuehlungsborn, Germany. Inst. of Atmospheric Physics Date: Nov. 19, 1997 Lidar Observations of Leonids Foiled ------------------------------------ The Institute of Atmospheric Physics at Kuehlungsborn, Germany (54 degree N, 12 degree E) expected the 1997 Leonids with groundbased lidars for Na, K, and Ca observations, an ionosonde, and a meteor-radar turned ST radar. Unfortunately, continuous low level clouds prevented any lidar observations during the nights of November 16/17 and 17/18. The ionosonde took one ionogramm every 15 min. It registered four sporadic E layers close to 100 km altitude on November 17, at 01:15 and 06:30 UT November 18, at 05:30 and from 09:00 until 10:45 UT. Each of the 4 layers extended to between 5.5 and 6 MHz. The results of the ST radar are under study.
