From: Rich Harrison, Kansas Date: Sat, 1 Dec 2001 22:49:14 -0800 (PST) On this date, at this hour, my son, his wife, and I were travelling home. We live in central Kansas, and were travelling north on Highway 281, which divides Kansas in half, north and south.| We had driven only a few miles North of St. John, Kansas, on the highway, when my son was the first among us to see the meteor shower.| They appeared low in the atmosphere, extremely bright, and distributed over an area which, from the ground seemed five miles wide, though we couldn't know their true distance in space. The "fronts" of the meteor, though varying in size and brightness, were white hot, and prominent. Their "tails", some burning quicker than others, trailed behind in sizziling reddish-yellow heat. As stated, though we were traveling straight North, on this highway, the meteor shower moved from the South-West to the North-East. They moved so quickly our observation could only last about five minutes, and without much success, I was only able to capture a minimal! image on the digital camera with us. After arriving home, my son spoke with his mother, who stated that the City Police, and apparently Sherriff's Department quickly began using their scanners to reach proper authorities, because they had not been given any notification of a meteor shower tonight, and because of the speed, and brightness of it, they thought it might be a potential terrorists air attack. Those fears were quickly quelled. Lastly, for the three of us who witnessed this, we all agree that this visual encounter of what appears to have been a Leonid meteor shower, was beyond awesome! Also, knowing that online you can get tomorrow's news today, the encounter was heightened even more upon discovering the vast information, including that some of these burn up in the atmosphere, hit the earth, and smash relentlessly into the moon.| This is one of the very few astronomical sightings Iwe've ever had in| our lives, that will never be forgotten!
