rom: Jure Atanackov, Zaplana, Slovenia Date: Wed, 19 Nov 2003 15:30:45 +0100 I observed the Leonids with Javor and Mitja from Zaplana, a hill not far away from Ljubljana (for anyone interested in where that is...). The sky was clear with LM starting at 6.8 and droping to 6.2 at the end of observations with the Moon high in the east. Low clouds were visible on the horizon all around us but the sky remained clear throughout the observations. The Leonids were not particularly impressive (=dull) and 'Filament' activity failed to materialise (bright meteors, right?). Several bright meteors but no real highlights to report. The weather did not cooperate unfortunately, so I was forced to quit after about an hour of observing. Only three meteors were seen during my Teff, none were Leonids. The next night it was clear but high humidity plus lots of aerosols plus bright Moon reduced my limiting magnitude well below 5.0 so there was no point in observing. My camera however recorded a few Leonids that night. We were rewarded with clear skies the next night. I observed for more than three hours Teff starting at 1 AM local time. The most active shower during the first period were the (combined) Taurids with four members seen. The next two periods were dominated by the Leonids. No fireballs were seen during the observation. The brightest meteor was a fast magnitude -2 sporadic in Lynx that left a 16 second train.
