2001 Leonid MAC
Two storm peaks were predicted, one visible from the America's (1767 dust trail) and one from
Asia and Australia (1866 dust trail).
Latest model results suggested to us that both peaks
may have similar intensity. When a multi-day deployment became
impossible due to heavy use of the FISTA aircraft for in-flight tanking, we chose
to deploy a local mission over the continental USA, focussing on the 1767 dust trail
encounter. The mission was complimented by ground-based observations
from Australia.
The flight path was an initial eastward trajectory out of Edwards AFB
to Alabama, and then a slow westward
return flight. This
permitted the coverage of the 1767 dust trail under good viewing conditions.
